Arnold Gjergjaj (38) – also known as “the Cobra” – successfully defended his WBF Intercontinental heavyweight title on Saturday, which he had won against the German Dominic Vial in March. The bidder from Basel defeated the Latvian Kaspars Zutis in the fourth round in front of 400 spectators at the Airport Hotel Basel.
In the first three rounds, the Swiss is looking a bit hasty for the provisional decision. His trainer Beat Ruckli says, “Arnold was looking too much for the knockout for me.” In the fourth round, the Latvian’s resistance seems broken: Gjergjaj uses his right hand to knock Zuti out and win the fight.
“I was well prepared, had a plan and executed it,” concludes Gjergjaj. The Basel bidder continues on Monday. “Then I will start training again, because I still have a lot to do and I look forward to the tasks ahead.” Expected to be back in the ring on September 23. Opponent and location are still open. (par)
