“The basis is missing everywhere”: national coach Voss-Tecklenburg sounds the alarm

What a week for German football. The men’s selection cannot win in three games, in the end they even make fun of Colombia, the U21 start with an unnecessary draw at the European Championship and they are in the spotlight for bad racism comments. And now the women are starting their World Cup preparation with a narrow 2-1 win against Vietnam.

After only three joint training sessions, the vice European champions showed an unsatisfactory performance overall. DFB coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55) found hard words for her team on ZDF: “That is not our claim. We’re missing the basics in a lot of areas, we didn’t have access. There is still a lot of work to be done before the World Cup, so we have to go from the current 40 to 100 percent.”

The Germans played without the champions from Munich and without super snapper Alexandra Popp (32), so the performance does not say much. Attacking player Laura Freigang (25, Eintracht Frankfurt) said the mistakes from the second half “must not happen, the impatience with the last pass was too great”.

The victory was hard-fought in the end, Vietnam stood up against the Germans for over 90 minutes and could have equalized the game. (nsa)
