Jason Joseph confidently wins the 110m hurdles at the European Games.

After the second of three days at the European Games, the Swiss track and field athletes are in 11th place. This corresponds to a promising starting position to secure a first division place among the top 16 countries in Europe on Sunday. The lead over the relegation places is 30 (classification) points.

The Swiss hurdle sprinters experienced the full range of emotions within 20 minutes. First Jason Joseph showed a confident run over 110 m hurdles and won the maximum of 16 points in 13.12 seconds with the second best time of his career for Switzerland. He missed his Swiss record by just two hundredths.

Werro wins, Kambundji disqualified

The world looked very different for Ditaji Kambundji soon after. The EM third was disqualified due to a false start. The last time this happened to her was when she was under 18. Thanks to Kambundji’s false start, shot putter Jolien Boumkwo, who lost 20 seconds to the winner and who slowed down before every obstacle and climbed coolly, even took two points for Belgium.

Audrey Werro was responsible for the second Swiss success of the day. A day after Ramon Wipfli won a sensational 16 points over 800 m, Werro also proved to be the strongest runner in the field over the two laps of the track, running from the lead to victory in 1:59.95 minutes. The U20 World Cup runner-up stayed under two minutes for the fourth time in her career and was able to celebrate a well-deserved victory on the big international stage.

Ehammer with a new record

The pole vaulter Angelica Moser and the long jumper Simon Ehammer achieved a nice 2nd and 3rd place. Moser achieved her second best result of the season with 4.60 m, Ehammer achieved a best distance of 7.95 m six days after his decathlon at the SM in Basel.

The individual athletics disciplines also count in the medal tally of the European Games. Thanks to the victories of Joseph and Werro and the podium places of Moser and Ehammer, Switzerland climbed to 7th place on the medal table with 9 medals (4 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze) after three days of competition.
