Photos of Jack Grealish’s festive escapades went around the world. The city star was criticized by some for its excesses. Others found it refreshing to see a footballer enjoying the biggest win of his career and savoring the moment.
Grealish’s actions did not go down well with Richard Keys (66), long-time BBC presenter, currently BeIn Sports: “I am amazed that the press approves of the excessive drinking of a man who provided an assist in 13 CL games. is no cause for celebration,” criticizes Keys. And the Mirror writes: “Regardless of what else he achieves in his career, it will go down as Jack Grealish’s greatest achievement to win widespread recognition for a wild celebration of more than 48 hours before he moves to the national team.”
At City-Star, this criticism is met with incomprehension. He hits back at Channel4 after England’s 7-0 win over North Macedonia. He had just had the best week of his life, with the treble victory, something that local rivals Manchester United last managed in England in 1999. “I did something that only happens once in a lifetime. So why not celebrate a little?”
Granted, Grealish partied more than “a little”. He was always at the forefront of the stadium polonaise, the party night in Istanbul or the Ibiza excursion. In Manchester a week ago on Monday, he appeared in slippers and a city jersey for the title parade. He was celebrated by the audience on stage and poured vodka in the stands. “I’m a turkey and the turkey needs to be fed,” he said earlier. During the Victory Parade, he had to be held by his underpants to prevent him from falling out of the open-top double-decker bus. At one point he stood on top of it completely naked, eyes closed, arms outstretched.
The next day, by his own statement, he was no longer drunk, but slightly hungover in the English camp. And on Monday, a week after his triple celebration ended, Grealish returned to the football field. And then announces that after a “brilliant season, it’s time to sit back and relax.” He will need the rest.
