As part of a small media round at the lawn tournament in Halle, Westphalia, Roger Federer (41) gave an interview to the “Tagesanzeiger”, among other things, intimate insights into the time since his career ended in September 2022.
The time he spends with his family has changed. “I’m a little more relaxed because I know I have more days or more hours available,” Federer said. As part of his foundation, he traveled to Lesotho in Africa with his entire family. “It was absolutely fantastic to be there with everyone for the first time. My mother and Mirka also came with me.”
However, what he liked most was skiing. For the first time since 2008, he was back on skis this winter, for the first time ever with his kids. “It was a dream for me to hit the slopes with them. We had a great time in the winter, they are all riding well.”
He is also on the tennis court with the offspring. “I really enjoy playing with them, we are often on the field.” But he hasn’t really trained well since the end of his career. He still goes to the gym four to five times a week to make sure he stays in shape.
And what about show matches on the tennis court? There will certainly be exhibition matches, but “everything in its time”. “Originally I thought it would come right after my career. But after the Laver Cup I said: I just have to give myself time.”
Commenting on games was also a problem, but he decided against it. “I had a few meetings and wanted to know what that might look like. But I decided not to. Becoming a commentator the year after I retired didn’t sit well with me.”
Federer is currently inundated with ad requests. In the past six months, he has received 1,200 applications for the foundation alone. “I refuse practically everything. That’s the part I enjoy the least.” According to the 20-time Grand Slam winner, however, it’s his own fault. “I used to tell a lot of people: get in touch when I’ve stopped. And now, of course, the wave comes in.”
Now he wants to take the time to find out what fits and what doesn’t. “Better a little less than too much” is his motto. New challenges that have accompanied the Maestro since the end of his career. (byl)
