Approved in Paris 2024?: IOC continues to play for time on the Russia issue

The IOC is still commenting on the issue of admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. “We will make a decision when the time is right. There is still plenty of time until Paris,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams said after the Executive Committee’s deliberations at its headquarters in Lausanne.

The IOC recently called for the readmission of Russian and Belarusian athletes under certain conditions, but left open a Paris 2024 decision. “The schedule has to be flexible because the situation changes,” Adams said.

Controversial IOC line

Due to the Russian offensive war in Ukraine, the line of the IOC is very controversial. Several world federations, including athletics, continue to exclude Russians and Belarusians. Others have approved the return of athletes from those countries. “Every association is different. You can make your own decision, we hope you follow our guidelines.”

It is also unclear in what form the IOC will send invitations to all National Olympic Committees on July 26, a year before the start of the Summer Games in Paris, or in what form this tradition will be deviated from because of the open question about Russia. “I can’t answer that,” Adams said.
