After Djokovic’s record title: Federer comments on the “GOAT” debate

After winning Novak Djokovic’s 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the French Open, Roger Federer hailed the now sole record holder in the highest note.

“It’s almost unbelievable,” Federer said about the Serbs in a small media round on the sidelines of the lawn tournament in Halle, Westphalia. “What he has done is, of course, nothing short of gigantic,” said the 41-year-old from Basel, who ended his career last September.

When asked if Djokovic is the best tennis player of all time, Federer keeps a low profile. “It’s hard to say. The whole discussion is hard to answer. I said to a friend, ‘Which is harder: winning Wimbledon at 17 like Boris Becker or the French Open at 36 like Novak?’ title.

Federer for the first time since withdrawing from the tournament

The 30th anniversary of the tournament will be celebrated on the Center Court in Halle. Of course, the ten-time champion Federer should not be missing. “I have celebrated many successes here and spent great moments with my family. I have always loved coming back here,” says the Maestro, who is himself honored with flowers and a video.

He reminisces, talks about the time when he was still out and about in Halle without his family and jokes about what he was doing then. But even with an attachment, it was always a great time. Sure, the kids would have loved to be there this year, but everyday school life puts a spanner in the works for the twins, as Federer reveals (video above).

It’s the first time he’s been to a tournament since his retirement, so “it feels weird in a good way.” He hasn’t played any matches himself yet, but is looking forward to hopefully playing some show duels in the future. “At the moment I am very happy to be away from the sport.
