Scandal in the national concentration of Belgium. After Saturday’s game against Austria (1-1 draw), former goalkeeper and vice-captain Thibaut Courtois (31) unexpectedly left the national team. The reason for this has not yet been fully clarified by the Belgians.
According to trainer Domenico Tedesco (37), the real goalkeeper is angry with him after a personal conversation and insulted because Inter star Romelu Lukaku (30) was allowed to wear the captain’s armband in the absence of the actual boss Kevin De Bruyne (31). The coach explained to the media that he did not want to lie and therefore did not speak of a possible knee injury. And it was actually agreed that Courtois would be allowed to wear the bandage on Tuesday in the match against Estonia (3-0 win).
After these statements from Tedesco, Courtois also reported on Tuesday. In a statement on social media, the 2022 Champions League winner said he disagreed with the manager’s words. He was “deeply disappointed” by them and made it clear that “the words of the coach about the personal conversation are not correct”.
So far so good, but what follows is like a frontal attack on Tedesco, which was only adopted in January: “Captaining the national team should not be a whim or an arbitrary decision, it should be well thought out. Unfortunately I couldn’t explain that to him. But I never demanded anything from him,” Courtois writes.
Speaking of the alleged non-existent knee injury, the 100-time Belgium international says: “After consultation with the medical services of Real and the national team, we decided that due to my knee injury I would return to the club and carry out further investigations.”
Before and after the game against Estonia, the coach of the Red Devils said nothing more about the subject. It is not known if and when Courtois will be allowed to return to the national team. According to media reports, Tedesco and Belgian sporting director Frank Vercauteren (66) even tried to convince the goalkeeper to stay in the training camp.
