Now it’s time to get serious: Monday afternoon the charter plane with the Swiss U21 national team landed in Cluj. In the student city in the northwest of Romania, the team led by Patrick Framework plays its three group matches at the European Championship. Opponent at the start on June 22: Norway. Then it is out against group favorites Italy and France.
“Of course it is a hammer group. But we are also good. If we act as a team and continue our plan, we have a chance,” says Filip Stojilkovic (23). For the striker, the U21 European Championship is the culmination of a particularly exciting season Highlight so far: promotion to the Bundesliga with Darmstadt 98.
In January, he even canceled Juventus Turin in order to transfer from FC Sion to the “Lilies”. “My teammates immediately accepted me into their circle. The plan was to settle down for half a year and then really get to work in Darmstadt after promotion. That worked out perfectly.”
But Stojilkovic was not only a follower in the second half of the season: with a brace against Kaiserslautern and the equalizer against HSV, he scored four important points in the promotion race. “Toxic, passionate, dangerous. This Stojilkovic fits perfectly with Darmstadt,” said the “Hessenschau” about the former FCZ junior. He says: “In Germany, the players are hungrier. Even if things don’t go well: you can always run. That’s exactly my mentality.”
A mentality he may have missed in Zion before. He makes it very clear that he doesn’t like to talk about his old club anymore. So much: “I’m sorry about the descent. I didn’t think it would happen with this quality in the selection. But now I’m happy to be with Darmstadt.”
After the promotion was confirmed on the penultimate day, Stojilkovic and his teammates went to Mallorca for a few days. Self shuts up and grins when asked about the party marathon there. The words of attacking player Braydon Manu in the “FAZ” give a deep insight: “We actually suggested Ibiza. The guys are too anti-social for that and we are welcome in Mallorca.”
