In principle, the new FCB coach Timo Schultz (45) does not need tips, says Heiko Vogel (47). “There was only one thing I begged him to do. Under no circumstances should he speak Swiss German.” Schultz grins, tells how he greeted the people at FCB with a “Grüezi” – and everyone would have cowered with laughter.

The scene underlines how good the mood is. How much the new FCB coach Timo Schultz has already arrived in Basel. Even the predominant theme of last season, Heiko Vogel’s referee attacks, is simply laughed at. «Heiko and I are very similar, but we differ in one thing. I’m not going to mess with the referees,” says Schultz, who was also a referee himself. Vogel looks over, laughs, says: “We’ll see about that later.”

Bird on the stand

In any case, things are calming down around him. “I’m going to sit where the referees sent me last season. In the stands.” He decided that for himself, that was not a condition of Schultz.

“I’m not the type to set conditions anyway,” says Schultz. He spent 17 years with FC St. Pauli and is now on the sidelines for the first time at another club. The 45-year-old speaks of “a house number” in relation to FC Basel. He was in the cup final against YB in Joggeli and felt the strength the club could develop.

The fact that they were 27 (!) points behind the Bernese cannot simply be swept away. “That’s why we have to approach the matter humbly and not spit big notes. But of course we are ambitious and want to play successful football.”

He cannot yet say with which team he wants to do that. There are too many question marks behind the selection planning. With Zeqiri and Adams, two potential permanent players are already gone and Males and Amdouni would also no longer be able to play for FCB next season.

“If someone leaves us, we have to do more,” says Vogel. This is what he did in the case of central defender Kasim Adams. Talented defender Finn van Breemen (20) comes from The Hague. It won’t be the last newcomer.
