If the now 44-year-old Adrian Mutu had taken his job as a footballer more seriously, he would have stormed into the absolute world top.

The former Fiorentina star does this off the pitch. If you read Mutu’s scandal files, even Balotelli becomes a model student. He served two lengthy suspensions, beat up a waiter, got into a chase with police, taunted his manager as Mr Bean and was sued by his former club Chelsea for more than £10m.

You automatically wonder: how good must this striker have been that he managed to score 77 caps for Romania despite everything. “He was the best of all my teammates,” says his former Fiorentina teammate Kuzmanovic. After all, Kuzmanovic also played with Christian Vieri and Luca Toni.

In the summer of 2003, Roman Abramovich took over Chelsea and together bought Superstars. Mutu is one of the first he signed, for 19 million euros. His start in England is promising, but then the Romanian loses control. He suffers from mood swings, gets a divorce, buys cars and yachts, lives more at night than during the day and causes scandals by the metre. In September 2004 Mutu and the police gave chase through the center of Bucharest – at four in the morning! The police only wanted to check his driver’s license.

In October 2004, there was a fight with coach José Mourinho. Because Mutu misses a Chelsea training, the coach sentences him to a doping test. Cocaine is found in the Romanian and the public mud fight begins. Mutu ends up being banned for seven months! Chelsea sends the striker off and sues for damages.

On January 1, 2005, Mutu transferred to Juventus through Livorno despite his suspension. Both clubs will be fined. It will be difficult for Mutu: FIFA will fine him 19 million euros (!). The legal battle then drags on for years as Mutu continues to appeal and lose to Abramovich and FIFA. The affair even reaches as far as the European Court of Human Rights, where Mutu finally succumbs in 2018.

In August 2006 Mutu stormed to AC Fiorentina. The Romanian also causes a stir off the field in Tuscany. He is flashed at over 200 kilometers per hour, 130 would be allowed. The fine of around 370 euros does not even cost him a sweet smile.

In January 2010 illegal substances were again found at Mutu. This time it’s about performance-enhancing appetite suppressants. He gets help from his mother, who claims to have left her slimming pills with him. Mutu says in his defense that he took laxatives over Christmas. Both are useless. In April 2010, Mutu was banned again – this time for nine months.

In October 2010, he was arrested for grievous bodily harm, beat up a nightclub waiter, fled and crashed his Porsche into a lamppost.

Even in the national team, Mutu is not a model professional. In 2014, coach Victor Pițurcă did without the star striker in the World Cup playoffs against Greece. The 34-year-old is angry and posts a photo of his coach on Facebook. He replaces Pițurcă’s head with Mr. Bean’s. The Romanian federation then informed him in writing that he would never play for Romania again.

Mutu was expelled from the national team in 2011. During a training camp, he was caught partying. But later he was pardoned.

Today it has become quieter around Mutu. He should be in control of his private life, it is said. He has been the coach of Rapid Bucharest for a year now. He should definitely turn a blind eye to his past if any of his players are a little late.
