The windsurfing event is called “Prince of Speed”, takes place on the Mediterranean coast near La Palme in France near the Spanish border and lasts up to six weeks. Why so long? Because the event mainly consists of waiting. Waiting for the perfect wind conditions to set crazy speed records.
It is the Swiss Heidi Ulrich (39) who keeps a cool head in the big wind poker and then sets the tone at the right time on Saturday. The Central Swiss native is taking a step further in her great career as a windsurfing world champion and speed record holder.
Ulrich sets a new world record for the nautical mile, which measures 1,852 km. She stands on the board and clings to the sail and races at an incredible speed of 38.44 knots, which translates to an insane average speed of 70.376 km/h over the nautical mile.
The native Schwyz improves her own record. Ulrich: “My previous record is from 2019, it was 37.64 knots, or 68.524 km/h.”
The new world record is not only a record in women’s windsurfing, but in general for any movement on open water: no sailor or kitesurfer has ever been measured faster.
But Ulrich won’t get rich off speed. Besides sports, she works quite normally as an HR specialist.
