Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) consolidated his lead at the top of the Formula 1 World Cup with victory at this Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix, his eighth in the championship, with Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) finishing second to seal his sixth podium of the year, number 104 since competing in the Premier class.
Verstappen (25) achieved his sixth victory of the year so far – equaling the 41 victories of the legendary Ayrton Senna, who won three World Cups for Brazil – by winning at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit ahead of double world champion from Asturias and England Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who finished third.
Other Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) finished fifth, just behind his Monegasque teammate Charles Leclerc; while the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) – who, like the previous one, advanced six places from the start of the test – finished in sixth position in the test in which he drove the fastest lap.
Verstappen now leads with 195 points, 69 more than Checo and 78 more than the brilliant Alonso again, in another youth a month after he turned 42 and that he is third in the championship he won in 2005 and 2006.
Thailand’s Alex Albon (Williams) finished seventh, one place ahead of Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine).
Canadian Lance Stroll, Alonso’s new teammate in Aston Martin, and Finn Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), who finished ninth and tenth in Montreal, also scored points.
The next race, the Austrian Grand Prix, takes place on July 2 at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (Styria).
