Rey wins in the women’s: Ehammer without competition – just under the Olympic limit

Ehammer wins the men’s decathlon with 8436 points and has a lead of almost 1000 points over the competition. For the 23-year-old from eastern Switzerland, it is the second best result of his career. He only collected more points at the European Championships in Munich last year, when he secured the silver medal with 8468 points and set the still valid Swiss record.

Only in the javelin and discus throw, in the shot put and over 1500 m does Ehammer have to make way for the competition. He must survive a tricky moment in the long jump when he recorded two zeros for the first time. On the third attempt, he jumps 8.19 m. Ehammer made history in this discipline on Thursday when he became the first Swiss ever to win a match at a Diamond League meeting in Oslo. In the Norwegian capital, the Appenzeller won with a jump of 8.32 m.

Just below the Olympic border

Despite the strong result at the Swiss championships, Ehammer remains just below the Olympic limit (8460 points). However, the prospects of qualifying for the Paris Games are still good, as about half of the athletes will get their Olympic ticket through the world rankings.

The women’s title fight is more exciting than the men’s. Winner Mathilde Rey can overtake Celine Albisser (LV Frenke Fortuna) on the second day of competition. In the end, de Vaudois placed 81 points between herself and her first pursuer to win the heptathlon by 6086 points.
