Joel Mall, born in Aargau, is officially a Cypriot since Tuesday. Just four days later, the 32-year-old made his debut for the national team in the European Championship qualifier. In Larnaca, Mall saves against Georgia but cannot prevent the second qualifying defeat. Cyprus lost 2-1 through a late goal. The debutants are not to blame for the two goals against.
Mall moved from Darmstadt to Cyprus in 2017 and has been at home on the Mediterranean island for five years now. He therefore meets the requirements for naturalization. “In the end I had to swear with my hand on the Bible that I respect Cyprus and the law of the land,” the father of two tells Blick.
Born in Baden, he played five international matches for the Swiss U20 national team. His regular club in Switzerland was FC Aarau, with the Rüebliländer he rose to the Super League in 2013. In 2015, after seven years with Brügglifeld, he moved up to the rankings.
In Cyprus he played for Pafos, Apollon Limassol, EK Larnaka and most recently two years with Olympiakos Nicosia – is well known in the league. This made integration into the Cyprus national team easy. “I know practically everyone and have been very well received,” says Mall. According to information from Blick, a return to Switzerland is imminent. Mall is on Servette’s wish list.
