A year before the World Cup in their own country, the alarm bells in football Germany are getting louder. In the last 15 games, the DFB team has won only four times, including only victories against Italy and the football lightweights Costa Rica, Oman and Peru. After the disappointing draw against Ukraine, the friendly defeat against Poland follows on Friday evening, as a result of which Schwarz-Rot-Gold plunges even deeper into the crisis.
DFB sports director Rudi Völler (63) is therefore fully served and does not comment on the game to the media. With a “No, not today” he runs through the mixed zone after the 1-0 defeat. President Bernd Neuendorf (61) hurries past the journalists out of the stadium without saying a word.
National coach Hansi Flick (58) describes the result as “disappointing” and particularly criticizes the lack of speed and poor assessment of opportunities. Asked about the current situation of the German national team with regard to next year’s World Cup, Flick is combative: “We are in a phase that is not so easy. But we’ll get through it.”
On the other hand, DFB captain Joshua Kimmich (28) is concerned about the situation: “One low point follows another. It is totally unsatisfactory that we lose the match. In the first half we were too slow, too lethargic, too uncreative. We have to stop a lot of things and do better.” For the upcoming World Cup you have to generate a euphoria that you are currently far from.
Defender Robin Gosens (28) gets an alarm red: “The situation is dangerous! We know we need wins. We have a home EM next year and want to get the people behind us.” With performances like in the match against Poland, that will certainly not work. The hopeful Jamal Musiala (20) also sees it this way: “We finally have to win matches again “We have one more year. Every game is important now. We are all annoyed! But we don’t put any pressure on ourselves anymore. There is enough pressure already.”
Hansi Flick is also coming under increasing pressure. The national coach was already in the crosshairs of the German media after the duel with Ukraine and Bastian Schweinsteiger has now sharply criticized Hansi Flick on ARD. His frequent experiments in the team in particular are a thorn in the side of the ex-DFB star: “The process is not progressing because Flick is testing too much. He then has to sit down with his team in September and be ready when you play against the greats. You need a certain rhythm for the EM.”
The German federation is (still) behind Hansi Flick. After the draw against Ukraine, president Rudi Völler said that Flick would “of course” remain the coach. “We are behind him as a team,” Joshua Kimmich tells Poland. Victories are now urgently needed to appease the German fans and the media. According to a survey by “Bild”, 80 percent of supporters advocate a new DFB coach. (mbi)
