Nick Kyrgios has been open about mental health issues throughout his career.

Nick Kyrgios gives a deep insight into his emotional world. The 28-year-old Australian, who has just made his comeback in Stuttgart after a long injury break, speaks openly again about mental problems in the second part of the Netflix tennis series “Break Point”. Specifically, it concerns the year 2019, which, according to him, is the low point of his career. He couldn’t handle the pressure of high expectations.

As the newspaper “The Australian” reports, Kyrgios explains in one of the new episodes that will air on June 21: “I really thought about killing myself.”

At the time, he hated and injured himself, according to Kyrgios: “My whole arm was covered in scars.” This was also the reason that he played with one sleeve at the Wimbledon tournament that year. And he continues: “I drank, did drugs, lost my relationship with my family and pushed all my best friends away.”

“Okay, I can’t go on like this”

Kyrgios failed in the second round at Wimbledon in 2019 against Rafael Nadal (37) – after four contested sets: “I lost at Wimbledon. When I woke up, my father was crying profusely next to my bed. That was the big wake-up call for me.” He commented, “Okay, I can’t go on like this.” Self-referral to a psychiatric clinic in London eventually helped get him back on track. Both mentally and athletically.

Kyrgios had already spoken about his mental issues in 2022 – and explained that he is now much better.

But he is also concerned with raising public awareness of mental overload: “I know you feel weak sometimes. But that’s okay. No one should think that he or she is alone.” (mpe)
