The TV blackout has been averted: ARD and ZDF are broadcasting the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand (July 20 to August 20). After months of rights poker, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has now reached an agreement with the world federation FIFA regarding President Gianni Infantino (53), the ARD announced on Wednesday.
The EBU states: “The EBU has reached an agreement in principle with FIFA to include the markets of Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and Spain in the existing contract for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.”
“I am delighted that we can give women’s football this year the stage that the players and the public deserve,” said ARD sports rights director Tom Buhrow of the agreement.
There had been a worst-case scenario in the room before. President Infantino complained that the TV channels’ offers were too low and threatened that several European countries – including Germany – would be denied rights. On the other hand, critics accused FIFA of wanting to increase its revenue under the guise of gender equality. (AFP/SDA)
