The fashion

For the second time after 2021, the European U21 Championship will take place with 16 teams (previously 12). Romania and Georgia had already qualified as hosts, the remaining 14 places were divided among 53 countries in a qualification.

The 16 participants were drawn in four groups of four, with the top two teams progressing to the quarter-finals.

The qualification

The 53 countries were divided into nine groups – eight with six and one with five teams. The group winners qualified directly for the European Championship. The best runner-up in the group (disregarding results against sixth place teams) also bought the ticket. The group’s other eight runners-up have settled the remaining four tickets in four home and away games.

How often does the U21 European Championship take place?

The U21 European Championship is the successor to the U23 European Championship, which existed from 1972 to 1976 and has been held every two years since 1978. First always in even years, then there was a change in the 2000s. After 2006, another U21 European Championship took place in 2007 and since then it has been held in odd years. A tournament lasts, including qualification, over two years and is also the qualification tournament for the Olympic Games every four years.

Which players are eligible?

Although this is the U21 European Championship, not all players are under 21 years old. UEFA rules state that the age at the start of qualification is decisive. All players under the age of 21 at that time are eligible to play in the U21 national team up to the corresponding European Championship final. This year, players born on or after January 1, 2000 are eligible to participate.

The Swiss U21 national team

Ten games, seven wins, two draws and one defeat – with this record, Switzerland finished second in Group E behind the Netherlands. Nevertheless, as the best runner-up in the group, she qualified directly for the European Championship finals.

Under coach Patrick Framework, who succeeded Mauro Lusrinelli last summer, the national team is participating in the U21 European Championship for the fifth time. There are 27 players in the provisional squad – two of them, Ardon Jashari and Fabian Rieder, took part in the A World Cup in Qatar last December. There is also the sextet Zeki Amdouni, Dan Ndoye, Kastriot Imeri, Becir Omeragic, Simon Sohm and Leonidas Stergiou, who have also played for the A-Nati. 23 players travel to the tournament, after June 14 a quartet has to jump over the line.

Frame leaves the U21 national team after the European Championship. He transfers as a coach to FC Winterthur in the Super League. It is not yet clear who will succeed him.
