He gave a final interview to the Italian magazine “L’Illustré”. Then Christian Constantin (66) disappeared from the scene after the ignominious downfall of FC Sion. Switch off in Indonesia. A two-week cruise in Bali and the surrounding area should give him something else to think about.
But what he had to say to the “Illustré” before that is quite explosive. First he politely congratulates Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy on their promotion. “You deserved to win.” But then he lashes out and it’s – and that’s a ritual – against the league and the umpires. But also against Mario Balotelli (32)!
“When you’re constantly being robbed, it’s hard to leave your jewelry open,” says CC. And thus aims at disadvantages for the referee. That’s right: the season is over, you can take stock: luck and bad luck in referee decisions and VAR interventions are usually roughly in balance. But many people from the football world who have nothing to do with FC Sion have noticed that the Valais team didn’t have the right balance this year. There was a lot of bad luck there.
Since this is not bad luck from CC’s point of view, but targeted attacks on FC Sion, he goes to court and demands compensation of 20 to 25 million francs from the league. For the mistakes of the referee and the license that according to the CC was wrongly granted to the promoted Yverdon. “This amount roughly corresponds to the budget of last season.”
The “Illustré” does its job in this interview and digs deeper. CC itself is primarily responsible for the descent. Just as the view in the commentary on the relegation of the traditional club also emerged. But CC doesn’t see it that way. “When you run a big ship like a professional football club you don’t always get everything right. But I don’t think my mistakes were worth relegation. There were the problems mentioned. Plus a lot of bad luck.”
However, the superstar that CC brought in this season to become European and whom he generously rewards with the incredible amount of 2.8 million francs does not fall into this category: Mario Balotelli. CC: «Mario has not returned the trust placed in him, nor has he rewarded us for the great effort we have made. The boy thinks that the rules that keep a collective going are primarily made for the benefit of others. If his advisors find him a country where money doesn’t have the same value as here, he might play again soon. Maybe not. And maybe that’s even better.”
CC generally has little sympathy for the new generation of players: “Everything has changed. Especially the mentality of the players. For them, the palmares, the honor and the pride of wearing a club shirt no longer have the same meaning. Whether they win or lose, it’s their social media accounts that matter, and they’re more likely to organize their holidays than to tap the resources needed to deliver a result.”
CC doesn’t seem hurt in this interview. Especially not when he says that relegation might allow him to move slowly towards the end, because he plans to give up professional football in a year anyway. A certain tiredness, even tiredness, shines through. Even when it comes to self-criticism. “It’s never fun to be criticized. Especially when you’ve put more energy and money into it than your competition to be on the same level. Then I say to myself: why do I give a spectacle to people who don’t care about you because of the problems? other than thousands of francs in fines and sleepless nights? And then they criticize you as they attack the police. I have to give you credit: if you call me a ‹crétin des alpes›*, you’re right. You really have to be a being an idiot to go this far and spend as much money as I did. That was my life for 25 years and I do not regret it. I want to remind you that there have only been two presidents who have made history at FC Sion : Monsieur Luisier and myself. And that’s it. Don’t be under any illusions: no private person wants to do that to himself.”
Sounds very melancholy. Only: CC is wrong on this point: there are interested parties and investors who would keep professional football alive in football-crazy Wallis. Only they all have the same condition: CC must withdraw completely. Which no longer seems impossible.
