Who is the “GOAT”, the greatest of all time, in men’s tennis? A much-discussed question for years. But after the next victory of Novak Djokovic (36) in Paris, it becomes increasingly difficult to award this title to Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal.

Thanks to his Roland Garros final victory over Casper Ruud, the Serbian has won his 23rd Grand Slam title and is now the sole record holder. So far he shared this title with Rafael Nadal (22 titles).

Is this the end of the discussion about the greatest player of all time? For Stan Wawrinka (38) it is. The Swiss pays tribute to his Serbian rival on Instagram after winning the tournament. In his story, he posts a picture of Djokovic and adds a goat emoji. In English, Ziege means “Goat” – short for “Greatest of all Time”.

Djokovic remains humble

Djokovic himself does not want to know anything about this title yet. “I don’t want to say I’m the best because that would be disrespectful to all the great champions of our sport. I think all the great champions of their generation have left a huge footprint, a legacy, and paved the way for us. So I leave that kind of discussion to others.”

In other sports, too, the discussion about the best of all time is always present. In basketball, opinions are divided between LeBron James and Michael Jordan. Besides their great achievements and huge impact on the sport, the two have one thing in common: they wore number 23 for most of their careers. And Novak Djokovic has just won 23 Grand Slam singles titles. A plate?
