The first Italian team to win the most important title in European club football was Milan. On May 22, 1963, the Rossoneri beat Benfica 2-1 at Wembley. The first of a total of seven titles (1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003, 2007). A year later, the other Milanese team followed with Inter. The Nerazzurri won 3-1 against Real Madrid on May 27, 1964 in Vienna’s Prater Stadium. It was the first of three wins for them (1966, 2010).

Survived multiple attacks – until yesterday

This record has stood ever since. Although he faltered several times in recent years. The attack came from Madrid twice. In 2014 and 2016 the final was Real against Atlético. But the royals and thus the record winner (14 times between 1956 and 2022) always prevailed. Atlético, on the other hand, is still waiting for its first win.

Now the industrial city of Manchester has managed to overtake the elegant metropolis of Milan, and above all against a Milanese team.
