“Is Vaud going on there?” That’s what all of Swiss football is wondering. With Yverdon-Sport, Lausanne-Sport and Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy (SLO), three clubs from the canton of Vaud are promoted to the Super League in one fell swoop.
From zero to three, from one season to the next – the expansion of the league to twelve teams makes it possible. Swiss Football League CEO Claudius Schäfer said of Sion after SLO’s barrage of success: “This is an incredible success for Vaud football. Congratulations.”
They were expecting Lausanne. But the fact that Yverdon wins the Challenge League and that the neighborhood club SLO from Lausanne is also promoted are big surprises. “It is exceptional that three teams from the canton of Vaud play in the Super League. The three clubs have done great sporting things and at the same time it is proof that good work is being done in the region at the base and at the top,” said Dominique Blanc (72), who was recently re-elected president of the Swiss Football Association SFV . And says: “As a native of Lausanne, I look forward to the derbies. As a Romand and Swiss, I feel sorry for the football-crazy Valais and the many great fans of FC Sion. »
Outside of Vaud, few are looking forward to this canton’s football coup. For example, Yverdon has a much smaller fan base than FC Aarau, for example, and SLO is actually the opposite of a crowd puller. For years it was an exemplary premier league club with a large youth department, but without supporters.
But not all people from Vaud only see the sky blue because of the triple ascent, some see clouds. Like former international Alexandre Comisetti or Vincent Cavin. Murat Yakin’s assistant coach once played for Yverdon and Lausanne before moving to Ticino 20 years ago. Cavin fears that the clubs located within a radius of 25 kilometers can now also get in each other’s way in the House of Lords. Although the canton is large, resources are not infinite, says Cavin, “local sponsors and donors cannot share their efforts properly”.
In addition, discussions could also arise in the future about the youth sector. So far, the trio has worked together. Talents from the clubs Lausanne-Sport, Yverdon-Sport, Stade-Lausanne-Ouchy, Stade Nyonnais, Montreux-Sports, Vevey-Sports 05, Gland, Echallens and FC Mount play in “Team Vaud”. The best young players between the ages of 16 and 21 play under the Lausanne-Sport crest. Coaches at Team Vaud expect a restructuring in youth.
By the way: SLO, the newcomer to the Super League, brings a well-known player to the top flight – the historic Pontaise. The stadium was inaugurated in 1954 and hosted the FIFA World Cup. Because Lausanne will move to the new, modern stadium “La Tuilière” in November 2020, the Pontaise will be said goodbye on November 7, 2020. Everyone believes in goodbye forever, everyone is wrong. The youngest Superliga team plays in the oldest stadium.
