For its 100th anniversary, the legendary 24-hour race in Le Mans is getting a real thriller. Since the start on Saturday at 4pm there have been spectacular full-throttle battles, many changes in the lead, many safety car and yellow phases, repeated violent accidents and repeated rain chaos due to the unstable weather.

What a drama at Le Mans. So far, the world’s deadliest race has only been damaged.

The really big crash happens in the middle of the night. It’s a nightmare for every Le Mans competitor: when slow moving vehicles suddenly appear in front of you in the dark. The crash of four cars rips one of the two Toyotas out of the race and with it a hot contender.

Defending champion Sébastien Buemi under pressure

In the other Toyota? There sits Sébastien Buemi from Vaud, fighting for his fifth victory at Le Mans. But the Japanese, who have been the only serious work in recent years with their solo show, have to fight hard.

The reason: this year too, legendary brands such as Porsche, Ferrari and Peugeot are fully participating in the battle for the prestigious victory in the royal class.

Peugeot with Müller falls back after the crash

Four hours before the end of the race, the Ferrari was led by former Sauber driver Antonio Giovinazzi. The Toyota around Buemi is second behind. Is the Japanese threatening a big defeat against the debutants from Maranello? It’s the big game on Sunday after sunrise.

The other rivals are probably eliminated. The Jota-Porsche heads into the wall. And Nico Müller from the Bernese Oberland breaks down in one of the Peugeots when he is swept into the lead, only to lose the lead for almost a lap due to the safety car phase in the mass crash. With Müller’s teammate Menezes crashing into the wall at daybreak, the car dropped from a podium finish to the end of the top ten.
