There is a funny video online. “The 20 worst seconds in football history.” And that’s not even an exaggeration. Manchester City players can be seen. In a league match against QPR in the mid 1990s. How they try to clear the ball several times. And fail groundbreaking. Creepy beautiful.

Worst 20 seconds: When Manchester City was still in pure chaos(00:42)

More than 30 years later, the Gray Mouse from the North West of England has become one of the best and most beautiful things football has to offer. Thanks to Sheikh Mansour. The Abu Dhabi ruler has invested nearly two billion francs in the club since joining the club 15 years ago. Jack Grealish (for 120m from Aston Villa), Kevin de Bruyne (76m/Wolfsburg), Ruben Dias (70m/Benfica), Rodri (70m/Atletico) and Riyad Mahrez (70m/Leicester) are the Top 5 transfers. Star striker Erling Haaland, who came over in the summer for a fixed amount of 60 million, is in 9th place. Manuel Akanji (for 20 million from Dortmund) is in 49th place.

Did Man City cheat?

Almost two billion for new players? It goes without saying that all alarm bells are ringing with regard to the “financial fair play rule”. This basically means that a club may not spend more than it brings in. However, Der Spiegel in 2018 revealed documents intended to show that ManCity was cheating. UEFA then launched an investigation, after which the club was banned from the Champions League for two years. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) opposed the charges on the grounds that they were not sufficiently proven or were time-barred.

According to the Times, Man City breached financial fair play more than 100 times between 2009 and 2018. So far there are no consequences. But if the allegations are confirmed, star coach Pep Guardiola would be a thing of the past. In May 2022, he told his bosses, “If you lie to me, I’ll be gone the next day.”

He’s still there. And wants to celebrate his third Champions League victory as a coach against Inter on Saturday after 2009 and 2011.
