At first glance it is an unspectacular scene. A young Hornusser trains his turn in a remote spot, where he hits the Nouss on a trestle in the field. The junior does not pass as desired. “What is going on?” the young man whispers after the tee.

Still, this scene has long been a hit on Tiktok. The short film by the Hornusser Society Studen-Madretsch has been viewed no fewer than 8.6 million times. In comparison, two of the most well-known Swiss influencers on the social media platform, Aditotoro and Franny, each have only about 2.4 million followers.

Blick called the Hornusser association and was able to speak to the social media manager, Caroline Schertenleib. In an interview, she explains that the company has been struggling with a decline in members for a long time. “We are only eight members, but you actually need sixteen for a game,” she says. “And because there are so few of us, we really only play for fun and that’s why we’re in the lowest league.”

Missed target audience – famous abroad

Experienced Hornussers can hardly be lured to the club in Bernese Zealand. So you got creative. Social media such as Tiktok and Instagram should be tapped into to get new members excited about the quintessentially Swiss sport – “because today’s young people just don’t use Facebook anymore,” explains Schertenleib.

The echo in his own club has been positive from the start. Not everyone just wanted to appear in the videos. It’s no wonder millions suddenly watch you play Hornussen.

The Hornusser Society Studen-Madretsch actually wanted to appeal to young people in Switzerland with the clip. “But somehow it hasn’t worked that way until now,” says Schertenleib. But the echo from abroad is huge, especially from the English-speaking world. “We were surprised when we saw the many comments, especially in English,” says Schertenleib. “We didn’t expect such a reaction.”

The Hornussers want to keep delivering

The big crowds on the field will probably no longer be there in the future. Schertenleib does not believe that tourists come especially for the sport. “They should come here from abroad. I don’t think they are willing to spend money on something like that.”

However, the club wants to continue. Schertenleib promises that videos will also be produced in the coming weeks. Not for the viral hits. But for striving to recruit more new members and thus ensure the continued existence of the association.
