Revenge? Giovani Bamba, who let down Sions U21, wins the first leg with Ouchy in the tourbillon.

Ironically, Giovani Bamba (23) sinks Sion in the first leg of the Barrage. His 2-0 win over Lausanne-Ouchy on Saturday could be decisive in their fight for twelfth and last place in the Super League. Especially Bamba, who hardly scores goals and once failed miserably in the Sion U21s. “When the ball hit the goal I felt a huge relief because I came from far,” says Bamba.

In 2018 he plays in Sions U21 for a few months and is not enough. “It wasn’t an easy time,” said the defensive midfielder after the Tourbillon victory, saying of his time in Valais: “I wasn’t perfect then either, especially when it came to my work ethic.” At the beginning of 2019, Sion Bamba was loaned to FC Wohlen in the Promotion League, where he also failed. Bamba is relegated to the fourth division with Wohlen. “I won’t lie: I had hit rock bottom back then. I was full of self-doubt. But I never thought about quitting football. I have learned from my mistakes. That made me who I am today.”

Bamba: “It was really a nice revenge!”

Today Bamba, the failed Sion junior, knocks at the gates of the Super League with Lausanne Ouchy. The 1.95 meter chunk has played more than 100 games for the Lausanne club. The provisional highlight: his 2-0 win against Sion. Bamba: “When I think back on that, it is really a nice revenge to score against Sion in the tourbillon”, he admits. And adds: “But all of that will have been for naught if we don’t confirm stage two on Tuesday.”

Sion’s past also has Ouchy goalkeeper Dany Da Silva. In November 2014 he stood twice in the Sittener Tor. 3:3 at home against GC and 0:2 against St. Gallen. After that he is not even in the selection anymore, at the end of the season in Wallis past.

Dany Da Silva has been convincing at Ouchy since this summer, he says: “Once you’ve experienced things like this, you naturally enjoy moments like this more in the jump-off.” But he didn’t have much to do in the first leg, says the 30-year-old. That should change in the second leg. “We have to concentrate and finish our work.”
