South Koreans imprisoned in China: Klinsmann offers player who is in prison

South Korean Jun-Ho Son (31) has been called up by Jürgen Klinsmann (58) for the national team for the upcoming international break. This is extraordinary because the player is currently locked up in a Chinese prison.

Son is an 18-time international and started three of the four games at the World Cup in Qatar. The player was arrested in mid-May on bribery charges in China’s Liaoning province and was last used for his club SD Taishan on May 10.

It is not known exactly what the allegations are about. Son is apparently suspected of taking bribes from “non-government employees”. “We are all shocked by Jun-Ho’s situation, he has our full support,” said Klinsmann, who has been South Korea’s national coach only since February 2023, according to news agency SID.

The player’s exact condition – “mentally or physically” – is not known even by the South Korean Football Association. The union is trying to get the player released, but so far in vain. “Every day we hope that something will change, but that is not in our hands,” said Klinsmann.

It seems more than doubtful that Jun-Ho Son will participate in the exhibition games against Peru (June 16) and El Salvador (June 20) despite a call-up. (dti)
