The Spaniard undergoes arthroscopy to determine the condition of his psoas in Madrid

If it is already unusual to experience the first week of Roland Garros without Rafael Nadal, it is rarer that the Spaniard lies chained to a hospital bed during those days. Nadal went through the operating room this Friday to undergo arthroscopy and learn the true extent of the iliopsoas problem he’s been suffering since January, according to his team.

The aim of the intervention, overseen by Dr. Ángel Ruiz Cotorro, his trusted doctor, is to find out why the injury is not progressing and why it has kept him in dry dock since crashing out in the second round of the Australian Open more than five months ago. The results will be known this Saturday, on the day of the Spaniard’s 37th birthday, but they will not change the opinion of Nadal, who two weeks ago decided to put an end to his sports career and take a break. regenerate his body and allow him to say goodbye as he deserves in 2024.

Despite the fact that this type of injury normally requires six to eight weeks of recovery, Nadal had to withdraw from Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, Miami, Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros, where he defended his title.. This a string of losses, coupled with the fact that he won’t be playing for the rest of the season, has dropped him out of the ‘top 100’ and if he doesn’t make it in time for the next Australian Open, his ranking will disappear.

At a press conference in Manacor, Nadal announced in May that he intends to say goodbye to the track in 2024 and that the earliest his reappearance would be at the Davis Cup, which will be held in Malaga in November.
