The Vegas Golden Knights win the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers. The team from the gambling stronghold in Nevada triumphed 5:2 in front of the home crowd.
In a sometimes heated game with many skirmishes, the Golden Knights made the difference with three goals in the final period. Defender Zach Whitecloud scored the game-breaking goal, making it 3-2 in the 47th minute with a wrist shot from long range. In the closing stages, Mark Stone (54th) makes the provisional decision before Reilly Smith (59th) scores into the empty goal for the final score.
Statistically, the starting win is worth a lot to the Vegas Golden Knights. Since the introduction of the best-of-7 format in 1939, the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup has won the first final 63 out of 83 times. Not so in 2018, when the Vegas Golden Knights stormed into the Finals in their first year of existence, losing to the Washington Capitals four straight after winning 6-4 at the start.
The second final match will take place in Las Vegas on Tuesday evening. After that, Florida, who are also looking for their first Stanley Cup victory 27 years after their first missed opportunity against the Colorado Avalanche, has two home wins. (SDA/dti)
