From July 1, the Bundesrat will make it easier to shoot wolves that cause damage to livestock. (archive image)

On Friday, the Federal Council entered into force the revised hunting regulation. Given the problems that wolves are causing alpine agriculture, he wants to enable more deaths. The damage threshold for a kill is lowered for individual roaming animals and also for wolf packs.

In addition, not only cattle killed by wolves, but also seriously injured cattle, horses and, for example, llamas or alpacas are now considered major damage.

Wolf can be shot when he threatens people

After all, a wolf in a pack can be shot immediately if it suddenly and unforeseen threatens the lives and limbs of people. Such shots are possible without the approval of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).

The Federal Council also approved an additional four million francs to strengthen livestock protection. The money will be used to fund immediate measures that the cantons may request.

Wolves are protected in Switzerland. According to the Bafu, there are currently about 250 wolves living in Switzerland and there are 26 wolf packs. (SDA/oco)
