It was a violet wave that swept over Switzerland. On June 14, 2019, hundreds of thousands of women across the country showed that the promise of equality must finally be fulfilled.
This year, on June 14, there will be another nationwide women’s strike – this time the demonstration is officially called a ‘feminist strike’ – so that men, non-binary and transgender people are also addressed. Only: what is self-evident for leftists often prevents middle-class women from participating. Many do not really want to go on strike and campaign for women’s rights in a different way, as the “Tages-Anzeiger” reports.
In addition, a scandal threatens to cloud the broad solidarity. The SP women temporarily suspended their membership of umbrella organization Alliance F at the end of March. This sees itself as the impartial voice of women.
The Social Democrats want to decide at the end of September how to proceed with their membership. From extending membership to setting up a left-wing umbrella organization as an alternative to Alliance F, everything is possible.
Reason for the dispute before the strike: the reform of occupational pensions. Alliance F campaigned for it, the left found it only moderately casual. Because: the SP, the Greens and the unions have issued a referendum against the proposal.
Only: a broad alliance is important to stand up for women’s concerns. On June 14, Alliance F is organizing a meeting at the Federal Palace, according to the “Tages-Anzeiger”. The aim is to take stock of the current legislature and to set the course for the next one.
According to the newspaper, Kathrin Bertschy (43, GLP), co-chairman of Alliance F, is satisfied. Progress has been made in the permanent funding of day care centres. Individual taxation, which makes a second income more attractive, is progressing and sex criminal law is being tightened.
SP alderman Tamara Funiciello (33) also appreciates this. For her, however, the balance is “fixed to negative,” she says. For example, she denounces the increase in the retirement age for women in the AHV, the insufficient revision of occupational pensions and the still large difference between the wages of women and men.
