The third time: a special committee must help shape future security policy

The Federal Council was informed on Friday of the appointment of the special committee, as announced. It is only the third time that such a body has been extensively involved in Swiss security policy.

According to the Federal Council, the war in Ukraine has fundamentally changed the security situation in Europe. As before and after the Cold War, this also raised fundamental strategic questions about the future direction of Swiss security policy.

Today, in the face of a renewed and likely protracted polarization between Western countries and Russia and possibly also China, the task is to define a security policy that comprehensively and sustainably serves Switzerland’s interests and is consistent with its values, wrote the Federal Council. This also requires a perspective from outside the federal government.

According to Defense DDPS, the committee must be widely supported. Valentin Vogt, former president of the Swiss employers’ association, will chair the meeting. In addition, professors of international law and international relations, as well as independent security policy experts, should work in the committee and parliamentary groups should be represented, different generations and linguistic regions.
