State Councilor Pierre Maudet (45) of Geneva has been sentenced by the Court of Appeal to a suspended fine of 300 daily rates. He had already been found guilty in federal court for accepting benefits for a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The judicial authorities confirmed in a statement on Wednesday corresponding reports from the “Tribune de Geneve”. Maudet must also pay compensation of 50,000 francs to the canton of Geneva.
Maudet was convicted of accepting a residence permit in Abu Dhabi in 2015 when he served in the Geneva government, the cost of which was paid in full by the Emirati authorities. He also let his family and his right-hand man participate in the trip to the Gulf region at the time.
Maudet was acquitted on appeal. The federal court appealed by the prosecution ruled that the luxury trip constituted an unjustified acceptance of benefits and then left it to the state judge to determine the sentence. (sda)
