Last week, FDP member of the Council of States Ruedi Noser (62) announced his departure from the Association of Owners (HEV). The reason: the commitment of the HEV against the climate protection law, side by side with the SVP. That was not in the interest of the Hüsli owners, Noser judged: “Whoever sends money to the association might as well send money to the SVP.” His departure made headlines for days – and for numerous departure points, as reported by the “Tages-Anzeiger”.
A smiling third party in the dispute is Casafair: The left-green Owners’ Association has gained numerous new members in recent days. Director Kathy Steiner (59) confirms this: “We received about 250 new membership applications in the past week. That’s as much as we normally have in three months.”
The growth is no coincidence. The association seized the moment – and posted a post on Twitter, which was diligently shared. It says: an extract from the Sunday Blick article with the quote from Noser that the HEV had been taken over by the SVP. And the statement: «Casafair takes the interests of its members and the environment seriously. Customers at HEV. Join Casafair now.»
The association also advertised on Facebook and Instagram to draw attention to itself. According to Steiner, the costs for this amounted to 30,000 francs. The effort was worth it, Casafair gained visibility: “Many did not know that there is an environmentally friendly Homeowners Association that is an alternative to the HEV.”
According to managing director Steiner, the recruitment of new members is just “a nice side effect”. “Our goal is to win the vote on the Climate Protection Act.”
Even with the newly acquired members, Casafair is only a fraction of the size of the HEV: While the “Association for Environmentally Conscious and Honest Homeowners” has about 15,000 members, the civic HEV has 340,000, many times that number. Unlike the HEV, Casafair is therefore a negligible player when it comes to voting on the Climate Protection Act.
Polls show that supporters of the bill are currently in the majority, albeit narrowly. Both camps are therefore likely to intensify their campaigns until June 18. With the climate law, Switzerland must meet its obligation to be climate neutral by 2050. It is considering subsidizing the replacement of oil and gas heating systems with up to CHF 200 million per year.
