The gap is widening: young women are moving more to the left, young men more to the right

The political differences between Swiss people between the ages of 18 and 29 are increasing. This is reported by the “NZZ am Sonntag”. More and more young women are going to the left and more and more young men are going to the right.

In 2022, 52 percent of women rated themselves left of center. For men it was 35 percent. This is the result of an evaluation by research institute Sotomo of all post-voting surveys since 1990.

Jump from 29 to 43 percent

A little over a decade ago, about 35 percent of young women were left-of-center, and that number has steadily increased — as high as 52 percent so far. For young men it is the other way around. In 2010, 29 percent believed they were right of center, today that’s a whopping 43 percent.

According to the “NZZ am Sonntag”, one of the reasons is emerging feminism, which is politicizing many women. The understanding of what the left means has also changed: from class struggle to the struggle against racism and sexism.

Academics vote left

In addition, the baccalaureate rate is higher for women than for men. And the rule is: academics tend to vote left.

An analysis of voting behavior over the past seven years shows that men are more inclined to support the army and the police, a more restrictive immigration policy and economic liberalization in referenda. In contrast, according to Sotomo, women care more about environmental protection and a strong welfare state.

With more and more votes in recent years, the gap has also become more visible across all age groups: women vote differently than men. In the past three years, women have prevailed in three of the nine votes and men in six. (new)
