In 2021, storms in Switzerland caused damage of 450 million francs. Like here at Lake Biel

Despite the major floods of recent years, the cantons of Vaud, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Bern, Solothurn, Aargau and the federal government currently do not want a third Jura water correction. Instead, they rely on local protection measures, better warnings and cooperation.

The six cantons and the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) announced this on Friday after a meeting of government members and federal representatives. This took place in Nidau BE. There, in mid-July 2021, the cantonal and federal representatives took stock of the flooding that wreaked havoc in the six cantons and other parts of the country.

“Huge cost”

In 2018, a farmers’ association in Zealand called on authorities to plan a third Jurassic water correction. This is due to the increasing number of extreme weather events. Soon after, this idea was widely discussed at a Landsgemeinde by more than 350 community and interest representatives.

For the cantonal and federal representatives meeting in Nidau, a third Jurassic water correction would be an “enormous cost” and “disproportionate to the benefit”.

Storm damage in 2021 amounted to CHF 450 million

In 2021, storms in Switzerland caused damage of 450 million francs. This is the highest value since 2007. The main cause was the flooding in the summer.

The worst damage was recorded on June 22, 2021 in Cressier NE. But also in the Bernese Jura and the Basel districts of Waldenburg and Sissach on June 23, in Vordemwald in Aargau on June 24. From mid-July, significant damage has also been caused in the communities bordering the Jura Lakes. The reason was the persistent rainy weather. (oco/SDA)
