The first tranche of the hydropower reserve for the coming winter is in place. The Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (Elcom) has accepted offers totaling 165 gigawatt hours. The costs for this amount to the equivalent of no less than 26 million Swiss francs.

In the tender of the network company Swissgrid, 15 operators of storage hydropower plants have submitted bids for a total of 673 gigawatt hours, Elcom and Swissgrid announced on Thursday. The amount purchased falls within the framework of the previously established core values ​​for the partial tenders, writes Elcom. She estimated the costs at 27 million euros.

400 gigawatt hours as a target

Due to possible power shortages, a hydropower reserve of approximately 400 gigawatt hours must be built up in winter, with a tolerance of approximately 133 gigawatt hours. The reserve will be purchased in September in tranches to keep the cost risk of possible price fluctuations on the electricity market low.

The hydropower reserve stipulates that storage plants must retain a certain amount of energy for a fee. The reserve must be called when the market cannot cover the demand. (SDA)
