The SRF allows users to deport refugees. «How does Europe distribute refugees fairly? Decide!’, Swiss television calls to divide people who have fled war and poverty.
The users must determine which countries have too many and which have too few asylum seekers. The gleeful push away of refugees is done by operating four checks: Should wealth, measured here in terms of gross domestic product, be an important factor in taking in refugees? The population size? The area of a country? Or the unemployment rate?
In the world of SRF, it is so easy to create a distribution key. The data used for this comes from the University of Neuchâtel, which gives it a scientific touch.
Although such a distribution key has been under discussion for some time, Eastern European countries such as Hungary are opposed to the definition of such a distribution key. Experts therefore doubt whether Europe will ever agree on a fair distribution of asylum seekers.
And – which no one likes to say – no state actually wants many refugees, but is happy if they stay in the other countries or travel on.
The migration expert Eduard Gnesa also states: “The distribution of refugees at SRF is far removed from the political reality.” The former director of the Federal Bureau of Migration emphasizes: “If I were to take anything good out of it, I would say that it shows us that in an ideal world, gross domestic product and other criteria can be used to distribute asylum seekers more fairly .” But in an ideal world, no one needs to flee, he emphasizes.
The receiving states themselves would also apply other criteria for distributing asylum seekers within the state: in Germany according to the population and tax revenue of the individual countries, in Switzerland only according to the population of the cantons. It is all the more unrealistic to agree on such a distribution key. And also for the following reason: “Who would stay there after being handed out to Bulgaria and not move on to Germany or Switzerland?” asks Gnesa.
“The fee-financed SRF should refrain from such ‘cheating’ and serious journalism,” says SVP national councilor Roland Rino Büchel (57). With such actions, the initiative to reduce the Serafe fee to 200 francs only helps to make a breakthrough.
And the Green National Councilor Natalie Imboden (52) gets excited: “Migration is not a game!” The issue is too serious to take lightly. “It is good to think about a fair distribution of refugees. It just doesn’t seem particularly successful here,” she explains.
The SRF defends that the contribution was made as part of the “10vor10” series “Focuses of Migration”, which airs this week. “With our article and the interactive element of the slider, we want to encourage our users to think about what a distribution key for refugees could look like.” Refugees would not be “distributed”, but only show “how unevenly distributed asylum applications were in 2022”. In addition, the topic is classified by an interview with the scientist Etienne Piguet.
Piguet himself explains: The identification of countries that take in many people and countries that take in very few people is a basis for thinking about a solidarity-based European asylum policy.
