Comment: The Bundesrat only responds to pressure

Again, the Bundesrat is not taking a strategic approach with its tank decision, only reacting to pressure, says Bundeshaus editor Daniel Ballmer.

Well, yes! Suddenly, the Bundesrat also wants to decommission Leopard tanks that are no longer needed, so that they can be passed on to Germany. This is a political turnaround. Until now, the government has always been stubborn: because of Swiss neutrality, their hands are tied. What has suddenly changed?

The answer: nothing. The Bundesrat simply succumbed to international pressure. The refusal not to pass on Swiss war material to the Ukraine caused incomprehension and resentment at home and abroad. Several countries have threatened to stop buying Swiss guns in the future if they cannot be used in an emergency. This would mean the end for the Swiss arms industry – and therefore also for independent armed neutrality.

It is not surprising that the Federal Council is now giving in. But it’s worrying. Once again our state government is overwhelmed by the rapid development of events. Again she cannot act alone. Again, she only responds to pressure because she can’t do anything else. This was already the case, for example, with the sanctions against Russia. And it always damages the reputation of our country.
