Now the Bundesrat has to take care of the salaries of the heads of the health insurance companies

Health insurance premiums are rising year after year, last year by an average of more than 6 percent. In the autumn this can rise to 7.5 percent.

Health insurance premiums are rising every year. At the same time, the cashiers can look forward to generous salaries. Politicians have long found this annoying. Previous attempts to limit health insurers’ wages have always failed. This could now change.

CH Media reports that the Health Commission of the State Council on Monday decided against a salary cap of CHF 250,000 for the CEOs of health insurance companies. The Council of States will probably follow his instructions in the coming summer session and reject the fixed salary cap of a quarter of a million francs.

The Federal Council should set wage ceilings

Nevertheless, there could be a legal upper limit for health insurers’ wages: as CH Media further reports, the pre-advisory committee of the Council of States approved a proposal by SP national councilor Baptiste Hurni (37), which has also already been accepted by the National Council. This wants the Federal Council to set the wage ceiling. The referral by the Commission gave the mandate for a legal basis.

Already in the National Council, the decisive factor was that managers are earning more and more, while premium payers are becoming increasingly difficult. In fact, wages have risen sharply over the past five years – in one case even doubled, CH Media calculates. As a result, the demand for a limit is not only supported by the left-greens, but also by some bourgeoisie.

The next premium shock is already looming

The parliamentary debate comes at a difficult time for health insurers: premiums have already risen by an average of more than 6 percent in the past year. This autumn it should get even worse: according to experts, an average premium increase of no less than 7.5 percent is imminent. (dba)
