At the opening of the annual meeting of the WHO, Federal President Alain Berset (51) recalled the joint successes in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic in Geneva on Sunday. However, the 75-year-old organization remains vigilant.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has succeeded in eradicating deadly diseases such as smallpox and polio. In addition, successes have been achieved in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, according to the Minister of Health.

Do more for the most vulnerable

Thanks to the joint efforts, the WHO has made everything clear for the Covid-19 pandemic. Further efforts, especially for the populations most vulnerable to war or climate change, should follow. In conflicts, health care is also a basis for peaceful coexistence.

The WHO’s 76th annual meeting of representatives from its 194 member states will take place until May 30 for the first time in three years without the state of emergency imposed by Covid-19. The WHO had just lifted it. Nevertheless, health experts warn that the viruses continue to circulate, change and create new threats and should therefore be monitored.

The focus is on the unequal health care with many shortages in poorer areas. The countries are debating how to ensure health care for all eight billion people.

Pandemic contract in planning

Also on the agenda is a pandemic agreement to strengthen the fight against the pandemic. For example, outbreaks must be contained more quickly and protective equipment, vaccines and medicines must be distributed more fairly. However, the draft contract will not be presented until 2024.

In addition, the deputies must approve the budget for 2024/25. A significant increase in compulsory contributions is planned. The WHO has so far relied on voluntary contributions from members for many tasks and has sometimes been unable to perform them adequately.

New early warning system launched

The WHO launched a global early warning system for infectious diseases on Saturday. The International Pathogen Surveillance Network (IPSN) is a platform for linking analyzes and samples of various pathogens.

The IPSN is designed to quickly identify infectious disease threats. The surveillance system will be based on genome analysis – decoding the genetic material – of viruses, bacteria and other pathogens. The analysis is intended to provide information about how contagious and deadly newly discovered pathogens are. (SDA)
