Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) presented her expert group ‘bank stability’ last Wednesday. The members are all experts in their field. Only one thing is missing: someone who has real management experience in the operational management of a systemically important bank writes “Tippinpoint”.

Didn’t Keller-Sutter put her committee together in the best possible way? Blick introduces the eight members and talks to banking expert Monika Roth (72) about the selection.

Just a real banker

The eight-member committee of experts is tasked with reviewing UBS’ acquisition of Credit Suisse and reviewing the “too big to fail” rules – a mammoth task! Especially if you have no practical experience.

At the head of the group is the former president of the National Bank, Jean Studer (65) – as a former member of the Council of States, he is more politician than banker. Most of his colleagues are renowned professors of law and economics: Mirjam Eggen (Uni Bern), Beatrice Weder di Mauro (Uni Geneva), Hans Gersbach (ETH) and Yvan Lengwiler (Uni Basel). In addition, there are SME industrialists Eva Jaisy and Eva Hüpkes, members of the international Financial Stability Board.

The panel is completed by the only thoroughbred banker in the group: Renaud de Planta (59). He still works as a banker at Pictet and before that he spent more than ten years at UBS.

Names more important than expertise?

There is no doubt that the eight-member committee is brimming with expertise in the most diverse fields. But is your specialist knowledge suitable for this task?

Banking expert Monika Roth is skeptical: “I’m also a bit surprised by this compilation and I wonder what certain members of this body can contribute to the given topic with the necessary depth,” she says.

Critics therefore accuse Federal Councilor Keller-Sutter of having based the group of experts on well-known names instead of practical experience in the banking sector. You miss former bank directors such as Oswald Grübel (79), who years ago headed Credit Suisse and UBS.

But if you don’t want an ex-bank executive to become too closely associated with the big Swiss banks, Josef Ackermann (75), better known as Joe, is a Swiss available. He also has a CS past, but above all was the boss of St. Gallen Deutsche Bank.

Personalities such as Grübel and Ackermann are not undisputed in public. Her position in the group of experts is also said to have been criticized.
