The haunted house of Bern must become livable

It is considered the street of the federal councilors, the Berner Junkerngasse. One or the other magistrate has rented a second home in the street. Doris Leuthard (60) once lived there too – in the Von Wattenwyl house. The former CVP federal councilor stayed with two other members of the current center party in the patrician house – for a ridiculous price, as Blick reported. In the meantime, no federal councilor or politician lives there anymore.

Federally owned haunted house

The haunted house across the street has been empty for much longer. The haunted house has never been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. Inside it is cold and dark.

Now the Von Wattenwyl house is being rebuilt – and with it the spirit house. The two properties were both donated to the federal government in 1934.

According to the Berner Zeitung, the haunted house has always been a warehouse. For the more noble Von-Wattenwyl-Haus, things were kept for a long time, which is especially impressive from the Aare.

1.5 million francs

Passers-by, mostly tourists, watch the haunted house much more often from the Junkerngasse. No one really believes that a ghost is up to mischief in number 54. But if you’re strolling around Bern’s old town with kids, you know how to pique their interest. Just bored, the kids look excitedly at the house as soon as their parents tell them things aren’t going well there.

As far as is known, the building from the 15th century has never been connected to the medieval city sewer of Bern. After the federal government took ownership, it installed a toilet at Junkerngasse 54. Now the federal government is paying CHF 1.5 million to make the haunted house, with its 73 square meters of floor space, habitable.

The shutters of the haunted house are currently closed. Construction sights on the roof show where two bay windows will one day be built. Windows must ensure that at least during the day the sun puts an end to the ghost.

A cellar is excavated from the Von Wattenwyl house and pipes are laid under the street to heat the spirit house from there. The conversion must be completed in July 2024.

For officials…

Only: Just as Hinz and Kunz cannot take an apartment in the Von-Wattenwyl-Haus, the haunted house is not accessible to everyone. The house is “intended for federal use”. However, it has not yet been determined which tenants are eligible.

That could mean two things: either you really have no idea how to use Junkerngasse 54. But because the Von Wattenwyl house is being renovated anyway, the haunted house is also being modernized.

Or else: the often discussed partial renovation of the Von Wattenwyl house also entails a renovation of the haunted house.

… or Brussels guests?

Anyway: under the Bernese arcades people whisper that the real reason is something else. Current building codes no longer allow a ghost to have only 73 square feet of living space. But thanks to the connection to the Von Wattenwyl house, the spirit soon had more outlets.

In addition, not every guest of state is equally welcome in our country. There are certainly people who want to scare the hell out of a visitor from Brussels. In the future, all you have to do is open the door to the boiler room in the Von-Wattenwyl-Haus and a chill from Junkerngasse will run down your spine.
