Parliamentarians feel in danger

Parliamentarians should be relieved.

teacher, farmer or entrepreneur. Those who sit on the National Council or the Council of States often have a part-time job. Switzerland is proud of that. But parliamentarians are reaching their limits, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”. Many meetings, complex topics.

“Many councilors are currently at the limit,” said a GLP National Councilor. In addition to her day job, she works 80 to 90 hours a week. Now she is calling for “greater logistical and organizational support” for the Council’s work.

There are still 20,000 francs left

On average, a member of the National Council now receives 132,500 francs per year. For a member of the Council of States that is 142,500 francs. This includes, among other things, a basic allowance, attendance fees and a 1st class GA travel card. However, after deducting all expenses for political work and submitting the mandate to the party, the GLP councilor would only have about 20,000 francs.

The country council member does not mention her name, because she fears that she will no longer be able to talk to company leaders on an equal footing. “If they know what I earn as a member of the National Council, they hardly take me seriously,” said the “Tages-Anzeiger”.

There are two proposals under consideration

The National Council is not alone. A parliamentary committee has developed two proposals on how the parliamentary mandate can be better combined with work and family.

There is already a lump sum of CHF 33,000 for a personal employee. That is too low, says SP country council member Edith Graf-Litscher (59).

Two proposals are now under discussion: either the parliamentary services could provide permanent personal staff, or the amount for personal staff would be increased.

Criticism comes from the SVP. If parliament promises itself more money for personal employees, the party will investigate the referendum, says party chairman Thomas Aeschi (44). Now the state political committee comes up with a concrete proposal. (brother)
