Municipal councils are no longer allowed to participate in naturalization procedures in the canton of Nidwalden. In the future, this will be fully transferred to the municipal authorities. The cabinet supports a corresponding FDP motion, announced on Wednesday.

Last October, the district administrator approved a motion from the Justice Committee. The government has been instructed to change the legal basis so that the Judiciary Commission and the District Administrator are no longer involved in the naturalization process.

No relevant decision latitude for community gatherings

In response, FDP district administrator Florian Grendelmeier doubled down and also filed a motion. This requires an even further amendment of the law. He demanded that the municipal councils should no longer be involved in the naturalization process in the future. All naturalization applications that have been examined in advance by a committee will be submitted to the city council for approval today.

The cabinet writes in its press release that there is no relevant room for decision making for the municipal council. But the effort is great.

“The required amendment to the law would further simplify the processes and significantly shorten the duration of the procedure without compromising the quality of the naturalization procedure,” said Director of Justice and Security Karin Kayser-Frutchi (middle).

“Only Benefits”

The government is convinced that there will only be benefits if the procedure is fully delegated to the executive, it continues. She is positive about the motion and would like to see the municipalities questioned about this in the current legislative reform.
