Power plants must continue to run in the event of bankruptcy

BKW Chairman of the Board Roger Baillod finds new fine-grained regulation of the electricity industry wrong because of an “absolutely exceptional situation” such as the war in Ukraine. “But you should make sure that the power stations continue to run in the event of bankruptcy.” (archive image)

BKW Chairman of the Board Roger Baillod finds new fine-grained regulation of the electricity industry wrong because of an “absolutely exceptional situation” such as the war in Ukraine. “But you should make sure that the power stations continue to run in the event of bankruptcy.” (archive image)

The three major players Axpo, Alpig and BKW are working on a solution to this, Baillod said in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung” published Monday. He also finds it “a joke” to separate the energy trade from the rest. Trade is necessary so that the producers have a buyer for the electricity at all times.

He is confident about the coming winter: “If no nuclear power plant fails in Switzerland, I assume that we will survive the winter without rationing.” However, this requires savings efforts – these are already being used as a kind of training to gain experience in the event of a shortage.
