Selenski’s speech to the Federal Assembly violates Switzerland’s neutrality

The summer session of the federal parliament begins on May 30. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy (45) will address the Federal Assembly, according to reports from the Federal Palace on May 5. The exact time of the performance is still open. SVP National Councilor Thomas Aeschi (44) is already on the barricades against Selenski’s connection via video. According to Aeschi, the speech would violate Swiss neutrality.

“I reject,” writes the National Council of Zug on Twitter, “that the Ukrainian president makes a video speech in the chamber of the National Council. Ukraine is trying to directly influence the parliamentary decision on the supply of arms and ammunition. Our neutrality is violated!”

Russians listen

The application for the speech was submitted by the Ukrainian Embassy in Bern and approved by the National Council and the Council of States. Zelensky would be the first foreign president to give a virtual speech to the Swiss parliament.

Aeschi’s commitment to the neutrality of Switzerland and his arms embargo have not gone unnoticed in Moscow either. The leading Russian state news agency “Tass” reports about the initiative of the Zug politician with the headline: “Zelensky’s speech in the Swiss parliament violates the country’s neutrality, according to MPs.” (kes)
