Economy Minister Guy Parmelin invites you on Friday for a round table on the theme of housing shortage.

Minister of Economic Affairs Guy Parmelin (63, SVP) invites people to the roundtable discussion on housing shortage on Friday. In addition to representatives of cities and cantons, various associations in the field of building and living have been invited.

The reason for the meeting: in three years, up to 50,000 apartments will be missing throughout Switzerland. Broad solutions for the housing shortage must now be developed.

First of all, a “layout”

But despite the great urgency, that will not happen so soon. Various interest groups are still little concerned about the subject, and the federal government says the first thing to do is to hear all concerns and get a “common understanding of the challenge”. This is reported by the Federal Housing Office.

Nevertheless, GLP National Councilor Beat Flach (58) applauds that this meeting will take place at all and that everyone can express their views. However, the vice-president of the Casafair homeowners association has limitations: “My expectations are limited, since it is only an interpretation of the subject.”

The Swiss Association of Cities (SSV) also considers it important that this meeting takes place. “And more importantly, that the cities are involved in the discussion.” That is where the housing shortage is greatest. The SSV also has no clear requirements.

Attack on Airbnb

The tenant association is different. He has already formulated his concerns and demands for action. In the future, rental yields will be monitored automatically. The tenants also demand an immediate end to the erosion of tenancy law.

Platforms like Airbnb need to be regulated more strictly to prevent city homes from being rented to tourists instead of local residents because of higher profits.

The tenants’ association also demands that the share of non-profit – i.e. affordable apartments – in new construction projects is at least 50 percent. He also proposes a limitation of the consumption of living space. As is already common practice in many cooperatives, there would then be a legal minimum number of inhabitants for larger apartments in urban centers.

Desire for less bureaucracy

The Building Association, on the other hand, does not have a high opinion of state interference. He mainly wants to support housing subsidies based on market-based criteria. One of the four points in the action plan for the meeting with Parmelin.

In addition, the union advocates restricting the possibility of objecting to construction projects at all levels. Because these construction projects would unnecessarily prolong or even make them impossible. In addition, the government must finally meet the prescribed deadlines for building permits. All this is intended to accelerate housing construction. (sq)
