“Pop down, pop up” – who knows what these terms mean? Far too little, says SVP politician Christian Oertle of Herisau AR. On Monday, he made a fervent plea against English speech in the Ausserrhoden cantonal council, as a video of the debate shows.
“We’re sitting here in front of an incredibly complex template that we have to sell to people over the next six months. And you heard it again today a few times, and it tickled me with every reading, these English phrases: Pop down, pop up, and the devil doesn’t know where to shoot,” Oertle said into the mike.
When asked by Blick, the chairman of the SVP faction explained: “Such English words just irritate me.” We just had people in our country who didn’t speak English. “That’s why I oppose it,” says Oertle.
According to Oertle, he took it with humor. It sometimes needs that. “It’s a message I just had to get across. And if we hear English again in the canton council in the future, maybe one or the other will remember that. Politics needs a pinch of humor every now and then.”
In everyday life, it should become a matter of course again that you can only find your way in Switzerland by mastering the national languages. (Okay)
